Five Cyclists Killed in Crash On December 10th on US 95 Near Boulder City
A tragic multi-fatality crash involving a box truck and multiple bicyclists occurred on Thursday, December 10, 2020, the Nevada Highway Patrol Southern Command and multiple news outlets reported. The Review-Journal reported that a group of about 20 bicyclists was going on an informal ride to celebrate a retirement when a box truck hit a vehicle following the bicyclists. At least five bicyclists were killed, and four more were injured. The accident happened at about 9:40 AM, north of Searchlight near Boulder City.
At least one cyclist was transported to a hospital by air ambulance in critical condition.
Our thoughts go out to all involved, and their families. This will certainly hit the cycling community and many families very hard. This year has been a tragic one for Nevada cyclists. A cyclist was struck by a car last month on November 9th on Paradise Road.
Cause of the Accident and Potential Liability for Injuries and Deaths
Very few details were immediately available about the cause of the December 10th accident. The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident. USA Today, which picked up the story nationally, quoted a Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman who said that impairment wasn’t suspected and “It appears to be a tragic accident.”
It is possible the driver of the box truck could face criminal charges. Because so little information is available, it is not clear what happened. If the driver of the box truck was working when the accident occurred, their employer may be liable for the driver’s actions.
The family members of all involved in this accident would be well-advised to contact an experienced and knowledgeable Nevada personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.
Cycling Accident Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 857 cyclists died in traffic crashes in 2018, and thousands more were seriously injured. Even with a helmet, cyclists are extremely vulnerable to catastrophic injury or death when struck by a vehicle. Many of these accidents were completely preventable.
Holding Negligent Parties Accountable for Nevada Bicycle Accidents
Although it is possible that the driver may face criminal charges for this accident, the victims and their families may pursue a civil claim to hold all liable parties responsible. Compensation available in a personal injury claim may include medical bills, lost earnings, pain and suffering, and other damages.
Wrongful death compensation may include funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, and loss of love, care, and companionship.
