Las Vegas Crashes During the Coronavirus Pandemic
There were far fewer crashes in Las Vegas in March due to stay at home orders during the Coronavirus pandemic. In March 2019, there were 23 fatal crashes in Las Vegas, resulting in 23 fatalities. In March 2020, there were 14 crashes and 14 fatalities. In April of 2020, there were 24 crash fatalities, compared to 23 crash fatalities in 2019.
Office of Traffic Safety spokesman Andrew Bennett told the Las Vegas Review Journal that speed had contributed to up to half of recent fatal crashes. With less traffic and open roads, there is an opportunity to speed. It is unclear if speed played a factor in the May 7th crash. The top three causes of car accidents nationwide are driver distraction, driving under the influence, and speeding. There can be one or multiple causes to an accident.
