Pedestrian accidents are extremely traumatic events. Our thoughts go out to the pedestrian injured in this crash. We hope he makes a quick and full recovery.
Common Pedestrian Accident Injuries
Being struck by a car can have long-term and sometimes life-long physical, emotional, mental and financial consequences. Injuries like spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries may result in permanent impairments and disabilities. Broken bones are painful injuries that have lengthy recoveries, impacting victims well-being and day-to-day quality of life, and requiring extensive physical therapy. Some pedestrian accidents even result in limb amputation.
Soft-tissue injuries (bruises, lacerations, dislocations and sprains), while not life-threatening, can cause significant, lasting pain and keep people from going to work and doing normal activities and tasks. Finally, pedestrians are extremely vulnerable to fatal injuries. Without any protection, a car, truck, SUV or motorcycle may strike a person with enough force that the person simply isn’t able to survive.
Nationwide Rise in Pedestrian Accidents
Unfortunately, we continue to see many pedestrian accidents in Las Vegas. Everyone at some point, is a pedestrian. If you are crossing a street, walking in a parking lot or even traveling on foot to meet a bus, train, or Uber/Lyft, you are a pedestrian. The NHTSA reports on their website, “nfortunately, pedestrian fatalities remain high.
There was a more than 3% increase in the number of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in 2018, totaling 6,283 deaths — the most deaths since 1990.” At one point, the US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration said “the pedestrian fatality rate in the State of Nevada had been among the worst in the nation over the past decade.”
