2015 Las Vegas Strip Crash Suspect’s Trial Delayed
One of the important rights afforded to individuals accused of committing crimes in America is the right to a speedy trial. Unfortunately, many accused individuals unknowingly or inadvertently waive this right, which leads to extremely long periods of time going by before having their case brought to trial.
Such was the case for one woman, Lakeisha Nicole Holloway, who was accused of intentionally running her car into pedestrians on the Las Vegas strip sidewalk back in 2015. Holloway’s trial was set to begin on May 30, 2023, but it was once again delayed after Holloway rejected a pending plea bargain and scheduled a hearing to determine if she should get a new lawyer. No new trial date is set, yet.
Holloway is currently being accused of not only murder but also 70 other felony charges. According to records, she was driving with her 3-year-old daughter in the backseat when the crash occurred. She’d been reportedly living in her car and sleeping in various parking lots for several days.
Holloway had driven to Las Vegas from Portland, Oregon, and even traversed through Canada in the weeks and days leading up to the crime. One potential trigger for the suspect was being told by security officers to stop sleeping in the casino parking lot. It’s believed that the suspect was on her way to Texas at the time of the crash.
Unfortunately, Holloway has been in state psychiatric care for the past seven years awaiting trial. She was offered a plea deal that would help her avoid trial, but she recently declined to accept the offer.
The collision killed one woman and injured dozens of others. The city of Las Vegas has taken preventative action and installed several barriers to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.
