Passenger Killed in May 13th North Las Vegas Car Crash
A 20-year-old man tragically died Wednesday, May 13th, in a car crash in North Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. The fatal Clark County accident occurred at about 3:20 PM at Statz Street and Azure Avenue, west of Pecos Road.
A spokeswoman for the North Las Vegas Police Department said the man was a passenger in a Ford Mustang that was traveling at a high rate of speed and collided with a Toyota Tacoma that was turning at the intersection.
The Mustang then travelled across traffic lanes and into a light pole. The passenger in the Mustang was ejected and died at the scene, while the drivers of the Mustang and Tacoma were both taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the May 13th North Las Vegas crash was under investigation, but speed was believed to be a contributing factor.
Speed Related Crashes During COVID-19 Stay Home Orders
The Review-Journal reported that the speed limit where the crash occurred was 25 mph, and the Mustang was estimated to be travelling at a speed of between 60 to 80 mph. While fatal accidents were down sharply in March at the beginning of stay-home orders due to COVID-19, they increased in April. Nevada Office of Traffic Safety spokesman Andrew Bennett told the Review-Journal earlier this month that “with the decreased traffic volume there’s more opportunity to speed, and speed has definitely become more prevalent in fatalities recently.” The Los Angeles Times has reported L.A. traffic deaths have recently surged back to pre-coronavirus levels, with speeding being a huge contributing factor.
Driving a vehicle is a privilege, not a constitutional right. A driver’s license comes with a lot of responsibility. Drivers must operate vehicles safely, including travelling at a safe speed, and being aware of other vehicles they share the road with.
Why Is Speeding So Dangerous?
Speed limits exist for a reason – to keep people safe . The faster you are travelling, the greater likelihood you will suffer serious injury or death in a crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has estimated that speeding contributes to approximately 10,000 deadly auto accidents annually, which is about the same amount of fatalities attributed to drunk driving. When you speed, several dangerous things occur:
- You are more likely to lose control of the vehicle
- Other drivers may misjudge the rate at which you are approaching
- The effectiveness of your vehicle’s occupant protection features is reduced
- Your reaction time is reduced
- You need more distance to safely stop your vehicle.
