Mother of Two Tragically Killed December 15th in Las Vegas Pedestrian Accident
A 25-year-old mother and her two children were struck by a vehicle on Tuesday, December 15th, in the central Las Vegas valley, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. The woman was struck on the sidewalk in the corner of an intersection after two vehicles – a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, and a 2004 Ford Mustang, collided at E. Bonanza Road and N. Eastern Avenue. The woman and her children were walking on a sidewalk at the northwest corner of the intersection when the vehicles collided.
According to the news report and tearful video interview of a law enforcement officer, the driver of the Mustang – a 15-year-old boy – ran a red light, and crashed into the Pathfinder. The impact caused the Nissan to crash into the woman and her two children. The young girl in a stroller was pushed out of the way, and the boy ended up underneath the vehicle. The mother was pinned by the Nissan against a light pole after the collision, and remained pinned until nearby pedestrians put the vehicle in neutral and pushed it off of the woman. She was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately pronounced dead by medical staff. The woman’s death was reported to be the 97th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction in 2020.
Witnesses who saw the crash called it horrific. The children, a 5-year-old boy, and a 1-year-old girl in a stroller, both survived, with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Nissan – a 44-year-old woman, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. The 15-year-old boy driving the Ford, and a 16-year-old female passenger, had minor injuries.
Our thoughts go out to all involved, especially the family of the young mother and her young children. This accident, so close to the holiday season, will surely change a lot of people’s lives forever. The young children must now grow up without their mother, and the effects of losing a parent are long-lasting. Whenever we hear of a situation where a pedestrian is struck while on a sidewalk, it is clear that they were an innocent party, and did not contribute in any way to the accident.
Although the incident remains under investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, it appears based on the information in the agency’s press release, that the driver of the Ford may have caused this accident. As a juvenile, it is unlikely that he owned the vehicle, and it is unclear if the vehicle belonged to his parents, or if it was stolen. If the vehicle was owned by the driver’s parent, they may be liable for the pedestrian’s wrongful death, as well as injuries to the children and the other driver. The driver may additionally face criminal charges for causing this accident.
