COVID Among Vaccinated Surging in Clark County
As if the past year and a half weren’t bad enough, it seems like we still aren’t ready for good news just yet.
Here in Nevada, our vaccination rate is currently over 43 percent for those fully vaccinated and over 55 percent for those who have received one dose. While that should have been relatively good news, it is overshadowed by the news that we are now seeing breakthrough cases increasing here in Clark County. In fact, 15 percent of COVID confirmations in July were those who had received both doses of the vaccine.
The Delta COVID variant is currently sweeping the country, with breakthrough cases, or those affecting vaccinated individuals, becoming more frequent.
While breakthrough cases are still relatively uncommon, according to experts, we will be watching to see how it plays out in our local reality.
Meanwhile, in Clark County
As for Clark County, that breakthrough rate is concerning. Compared to 2 and 3 percent in March and April respectively, breakthrough cases became more prevalent in June, and now, in August, it has reached 16 percent so far this month.
This begs the question of whether we have already “out-varianted” our current vaccinations and how long what we do have will continue to be effective. As the virus spreads and mutates, is it possible that the Delta variant may only be the beginning of our woes?
Infectious disease experts still say that the vaccinations we have protect against the Delta variant, despite the breakthrough cases. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the administration’s top adviser, said in a recent interview, “By no means does that mean that you’re dealing with an unsuccessful vaccine. The success of the vaccine is based on the prevention of illness.”
The Godzilla of Variants
But those on the ground in Clark County may not be so optimistic. Cassius Locket, the Southern Nevada Health District’s Director of Disease Surveillance and Control, likened the new variant to “Godzilla.” Lockett confirmed that 11 percent of the people who have been hospitalized since June in his district had been fully vaccinated and 13 percent of COVID-related deaths were also fully vaccinated individuals.
While breakthrough cases are concerning, health officials still believe they should not be used as an excuse not to get vaccinated. Lockett feels that the best protection still remains the vaccine in conjunction with other strategies such as masking and personal hygiene.
Legal Remedies for COVID?
In the meantime, anticipating a flurry of lawsuits, 30 states have instituted liability protections for businesses due to COVID. But these lawsuits have yet to really materialize. We have seen wrongful death lawsuits spring up in several areas of the country against businesses where families lost loved ones due to COVID. In some states, lawyers are exploring legal remedies for those who have been impacted by COVID, from personal injury claims to lawsuits regarding false claims, price gouging, and other COVID-related matters.
While civil lawsuits against individuals for spreading the virus are unlikely right now, like everything else these past couple of years, truth is often stranger than fiction. The personal injury team at LV Personal Injury Lawyers will be watching.
