Another Pedestrian Fatality in Las Vegas
As anyone who frequently drives in Las Vegas knows, pedestrians are a constant concern. Motorists must remain as vigilant as possible at all times for pedestrians who may be crossing the road, walking along sidewalks, or traversing downtown. At the same time, it’s equally important for pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings to stay safe, too.
In mid-September, a 61-year-old pedestrian was crossing a busy intersection near Cerrito Street was hit by a vehicle. The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that the elderly female was struck by a 2019 Ford F-150 truck that was traveling North on Cerrito. The pedestrian was reportedly crossing the road at the intersection when she was hit by the truck.
Unfortunately, responding paramedics believed that the victim’s injuries didn’t meet the criteria for their fatal detail to help. Instead, the victim was taken to the Sunrise Hospital Medical Center. At the time, it seemed like the right decision, but two days later, the 61-year-old succumbed to her wounds and passed away.
The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that this recent fatality is the 102nd traffic-related death in the jurisdiction in 2022 alone.
Pedestrian Accidents in Las Vegas: Who Is Liable?
Throughout the rest of the country, pedestrian-related traffic deaths are decreasing, but Las Vegas doesn’t reflect the same decline. One reason for this is because there is so much foot traffic in Vegas and the surrounding areas. Another reason is because there is a higher level of intoxicated foot and motorist traffic than in other areas of the country.
Regardless of these facts, drivers still have a duty to provide for the care and safety of pedestrians on the road. While not all pedestrian accidents are a result of the driver’s negligence, many of them are.
Drivers are more likely to strike a pedestrian when they’re speeding, violating traffic rules, driving under the influence, or getting distracted while behind the wheel. Drivers should know that every intersection has a crosswalk, so it’s important to remain vigilant at every single one.
If a pedestrian accident does happen, then the pedestrian’s injuries are likely to be pretty significant after getting struck by a car. In many situations, the driver will be held legally and financially liable for the fallout of the accident. This could mean paying for the injured pedestrians medical bills, lost wages, rehabilitation costs, and more.
